The role of a teacher is played by many people in our lives. At a very young age, it could be our parents. Then in school, we have a class teacher and for higher classes, we have a subject teacher. At times, it could be your friends or siblings who teach you something. On a more philosophical note, life itself is an important teacher.
While some teachers might just explain the concepts in a subject, there are others who are so passionate that the student tends to fall in love with the subject. If you look back to your favourite subject in school, there is a high chance that it would be linked to your favourite teacher.
The most impactful teaching is one where the student is completely involved in what the teacher is explaining. Ben Franklin had said,
Tell me and I forget.
Teach me and I remember.
Involve me and I learn.
– Ben Franklin
On a lighter note, those of you who have watched or read about the show "Money Heist” can relate to how passionate The Professor is.
Coming to the UPSC journey, I believe that each student who embarks on this path will have a number of stories to share about the critical role played by his/her teacher. They teach us to be humble, to persevere and get back on our feet when we fail.
We learn from them the importance of hard work and the importance of dreaming big in life.
Bill Gates once said, “Success is a lousy teacher. It seduces smart people into thinking they can’t lose.”
- The Psychology of Money
More specifically in the Public Administration journey, I have had teachers such as Manjunath Sir and Sailesh Sir, who helped to understand the basics well and develop an interest in the subject. They are also very approachable and clarify any doubts that I have.
In a virtual mode and through Test Series, I have also learned a lot and I continue to do so from the videos of Pavan Kumar Sir and Ansari Sir.
I also continue to learn from the guidance of a number of seniors and friends who provide feedback and suggestions on the answers I practice.
I believe that the teachers’ day is an occasion where we can pause and express our gratitude to all those individuals and institutions that have shaped our thinking and personality.
Do take a moment to let your teacher know that they have made a difference in your life. This can give a lot of satisfaction to your teacher.
Who has been the teacher figure in your life that has inspired you? Do share a line or two about them.
My mother has been the greatest teacher in my life. She has led a life of hardships, yet she awes me with her dedication, courage and sense of justice. She herself is a professor and most of the days, she hardly gets sleep of 4-5hrs and leave no stones unturned to give her best lecture every day. She gives her own books to poor students. She is someone who not only fights for educating me, but for every girl child she knows. Every time she visits our village, she speaks against child marriage and promotes education for everyone. She has never taught me personally because she is always so busy. Even today, we rarely have lunch together. She is not much talkative. But I learn from her actions. Like recently, no one visited a family party thrown by a colleague of backward caste. She was not well, yet she decided to go just because she admires people based on their work, not religion or caste. I think I can write a whole book on her. That's how much she inspires me, not as my mother, but as a person. Happy Teacher's Day!!
