'Organisation of the future will be organic adaptive structures but temporary systems.' Discuss how Warren Bennis characterizes the new form of organization.
Paper 1 : Organisations | 2020
Warren Bennis is one of the situational theorists. Situational Theory tried to identify the basis for its suitability and appropriateness based on technology, environment, process, structure, function, etc.
Organic Adaptive Organisation:
According to Warren Bennis, the new form of organization have to be organic and adaptive in structure.
The Organisation has to be adaptive to a fluidic, changing, and dynamic environment - thus a temporary system.
In comparison to the stable environment of before, now the environment has become dynamic due to technology and competitive changing choices of man.
So, the bureaucracy model which was valid and suitable before has become inadequate.
Characteristics of New form of Organisation:
The ideas of Warren Bennis are very similar to that of Alvin Toffler.
Alvin Toffler suggested ‘Adhocracy’ - which will be suitable for the fast-changing environment.
Change in structure and fluidity according to the situation.
Example: Indian economy before and after the reforms of 1991 - adaptation to changing needs within and outside the country’s Economy
.
Also, GoI has started using AI tools to learn from environments like - Project Insights.
These changes are called by Warren Bennis as ‘Organic Adaptive Structure’.
Thus the system approach took an open-ended view of the organisation in the context of an interacting and dynamic environment.
